How Safe is Our World

Our world is full of danger both man-made and natural. In 2012 Canada was ranked 4 out of 158 in the global peace index. The safest country in the global peace index is Iceland ranked 1 out of 158, and the most dangerous country in the global peace index is Somalia ranked 158 out of 158. This site only accounts for man-made dangers. In 1900 there was a hurricane in Galveston, Texas that killed an approximate 12,000 to 6,000 people. But in 2012, an earthquake in Haiti killed at least 250,000 people with more corpses being dug out of the rubble. What about the topic of pollution? What have we done to our world? Since the first fire pollution has affected our world to the point of it being a serious global issue. La Oroya, a mining town in Peru, because of its smelter it has 85% more arsenic in the atmosphere above the town that is safe.  Also Lake Karachay has so many radioactive pollutants in it, that you can get a lethal dose of radiation poisoning by standing in spots for 1 hour near certain parts of the lake. Let’s change gears for a moment and talk about diseases. The black plague killed one 3rd of the population of Europe. That’s nothing compared to the parasite called Plasmodium, which causes malaria. Professor Baruch Blumberg determined that out of all the people who are dead, half died of malaria. I think our world is a very dangerous place. What do you think? 1. I find that you are talking about all of nature disasters, and you can't really prevent those from happening. Also the Black Plague that just happened along time ago, and they had no idea what that was because they had no technology back then. A lot of these disasters are a nature thing, and there's not a lot of man made disasters because we worry way to much about the nature ones like a earthquake or hurricane.

  3. What about the smelter in La Oroya, and lake Karachay. That makes our world worse than it already is.
